The best plus size swimwear is not about hiding your body. It’s about finding designs that support the way you actually live.

After more than 17 years as the owner and designer behind Designs by Jenici, I’ve learned that confidence has very little to do with a number on a size tag and almost everything to do with how a garment fits, functions, and makes you feel.

My background includes custom fashion, plus-size design, runway bodysuits, historical garments, lingerie, theatrical costumes, sexy cosplay, and custom pieces created for clients around the world. That experience changed the way I shop for swimwear.

I don’t immediately look at the color.

I look at the fabric.

I look at the recovery.

I look at the neckline.

I look at the bust support.

I look at the strap placement.

I ask myself one simple question. Will this still feel comfortable after wearing it for six hours?

Today’s plus size swimwear offers much more than the basic one-piece options many of us grew up with. Modern collections include supportive construction, adjustable features, sculpting fabrics, fashion-forward silhouettes, and designs that fit different lifestyles.

Instead of shopping based only on trends, learning how construction, support, fabric, and personal style work together will help you choose plus size swimwear you’ll actually enjoy wearing.

Stop Shopping by Size, Start Shopping by Swim Goals

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned through custom design when choosing plus size swimwear, is that clothing should always match the activity.

The fitted bodysuits I created for fashion shows weren’t designed the same way as custom

lingerie. Historical garments required different construction than sexy cosplay. Swimwear follows the same rule.

The question isn’t, “What size should I buy?”

The question is, “What am I planning to do while wearing it?”

Relaxing at the Resort

Woman in black ruffle swimdress.

If I’m spending the day at a resort, I want plus size swimwear that already feels styled.

I’m not looking for the most practical suit in my suitcase. I’m looking for something that feels polished, feminine, and effortless.

Affiliate Pick: Xpluswear Design Plus Size Swimwear Beach Black V-Neck Ruffle Asymmetric Hem Fabric Swim Dress

This black plus size swimwear dress is exactly what I picture when I think about resort fashion. The plunging halter neckline creates a more dramatic silhouette, while the cascading ruffles and asymmetrical hem add movement without making the suit feel overdesigned.

After years of working with lingerie and fitted garments, I naturally notice when swimwear borrows details from other categories of fashion. This design feels more like a resort dress than traditional swimwear.

I would pair it with oversized sunglasses, gold jewelry, and a woven tote bag.

Swimming for Exercise

Women in sporty swim dress.

Exercise swimwear should prioritize movement over trends.

Support, stability, coverage, and recovery become much more important when you’re actually swimming instead of sitting beside the pool.

Affiliate Pick: Lands’ End Women’s Tugless High Neck Swim Dress Plus Size Swimwear

The higher neckline creates more secure coverage, while the Tugless construction helps the swimsuit stay in place while you’re moving.

This is exactly the type of design I recommend for active swim days because it allows you to focus on the activity instead of constantly adjusting your swimsuit.

Tropical Vacations

Woman in green one piece swimsuit in a gazebo posing for a modeling photo.

Tropical vacations are where I start thinking like a merchandiser and stylist instead of shopping for a swimsuit as a single piece.

I want something that feels vacation-ready on its own but can also work with a skirt, lightweight pants, sandals, or a cover-up when I leave the beach.

Affiliate Pick: Retro Stage Plus Size Swimwear Green 1950s Keyhole Neck Halter Swimsuit

This green Retro Stage suit fits the tropical vacation category beautifully. The saturated green color immediately feels lush and destination-ready, while the 1950s-inspired halter neckline gives it a more polished, feminine shape.

The keyhole detail keeps the front from feeling too basic, and the retro silhouette gives it enough personality that I could easily imagine styling it beyond the water with a wrap skirt, oversized sunglasses, or a lightweight resort layer.

My background in historical fashion and lingerie design makes me especially drawn to swimsuits that use vintage proportions in a way that still feels wearable now. This one feels classic without looking dated.

Cruise Getaways

Woman on a pier looking out at the water in an orange swimsuit with sunglasses.

Cruises are one of my favorite examples of why shopping for plus size swimwear by activity works so much better than shopping by size.

A cruise vacation can include swimming, sightseeing, shopping, excursions, dinners, and poolside relaxation, sometimes all in the same day.

Affiliate Pick: Xpluswear Design Plus Size Swimwear Beach Orange Round Neck Ruffle Fabric Swim Dress

This orange swimwear dress immediately feels vacation-ready. The bright color creates energy, while the ruffle details soften the silhouette and make it feel more styled.

I love pieces that transition easily between multiple activities, and this one does exactly that.

The Anatomy of a Great Swimsuit

Why Fabric Recovery Matters More Than Thickness

Thicker fabric doesn’t automatically mean better fabric.

Recovery refers to how well the material returns to its original shape after stretching.

Years of designing lingerie, fitted bodysuits, and custom clothing taught me that recovery is one of the most important characteristics in any stretch garment.

The Difference Between Compression and Support

Compression creates pressure.

Support comes from construction.

Cups, straps, underwire, seam placement, lining, and internal structure create support.

The two are not interchangeable.

Built-In Structure vs. Added Shapewear

Personally, I prefer the structure to be built into my plus size swimwear.

If I’m already wearing something fitted in hot weather, I don’t want another layer underneath it.

Adjustable Features That Improve Fit

Adjustable straps can completely change the way a swimsuit fits.

Two women can wear the same size and have completely different proportions.

Fit should never rely on a number alone.

Lining Details That Increase Confidence

Lining affects support, opacity, comfort, and overall fit.

It’s one of those details most shoppers overlook, but designers notice immediately.

Build Your Plus Size Swimwear Personality Profile

The Elegant Minimalist

If your style is timeless and understated, you don’t need loud prints or dramatic details.

Affiliate Pick: Lane Bryant Underwire Versatile-Strap Plus Size Swimwear Swim Dress

The sweetheart neckline creates a beautiful shape, while the solid black color keeps the overall look clean and refined.

I also appreciate the versatile straps because they allow for more customization through the bust.

The flowing skirt creates movement without overwhelming the silhouette.

The Color Enthusiast

If color makes you happy, wear color.

Affiliate Pick: Xpluswear Design Plus Size Swimwear Beach Multicolor Tie-Dye V-Neck Ruffle Fabric Two-Piece Swimsuit

This suit feels joyful.

The tie-dye print creates a playful vacation vibe, while the ruffle details add movement and personality.

I’ve spent years studying trend forecasting and color theory, and I firmly believe that plus-size women shouldn’t feel pressured to hide behind dark colors.

The Resort Fashion Lover

Woman in lime green ruffled swimsuit posing for picture at a resort.

Some swimsuits don’t just look like swimwear.

They look like complete outfits.

Affiliate Pick: Xpluswear Design Plus Size Swimwear Beach Fluorescent Green V-Neck Ruffle Tiered Fabric Two-Piece Swimsuit

The dramatic ruffles immediately caught my attention.

The fluorescent green color is bold, but it’s the oversized ruffles and tiered skirt that make this design feel almost editorial.

As someone who has designed runway pieces, theatrical costumes, and statement garments, I love clothing that blurs the line between fashion and function.

The Vintage Glam Fan

Woman modeling a pink polka dotted swim dress with front bow in front of a vanity mirror.

This is one of my favorite swimsuits in the entire article.

Jenici’s Pick: Retro Stage Plus Size Swimwear Pink 1940s Polka Dots Halter Swimsuit

The pink polka-dot print is playful, but the silhouette is what makes this swimsuit special.

The halter neckline and high-waisted shape capture the proportions I love in vintage-inspired fashion.

Working with historical garments taught me that true vintage style is about more than adding a retro print to a modern design.

The shape matters just as much as the pattern.

The Trend Collector

If your style leans alternative, edgy, or unexpected, this category is for you.

Affiliate Pick: Retro Stage Plus Size Swimwear Black 1950s Floral Skull Print Halter Swimsuit

The combination of skulls, flowers, and spiderwebs immediately caught my attention.

The high-waisted silhouette keeps it feminine, while the print pushes it toward alternative fashion.

It feels like vintage pinup with a darker, gothic influence.

Beyond One-Pieces: The Modern World of Plus Size Swimwear

Longline Bikini Tops

Affiliate Pick: Lane Bryant Underwire Balconette Bikini Top Plus Size Swimwear

My lingerie background makes me especially picky about bikini tops.

I want support, structure, and a shape that still feels feminine.

The balconette silhouette gives this top a lingerie-inspired feel, while the underwire creates real support.

Swim Dresses With Modern Silhouettes

Affiliate Pick: Torrid Wire-Free Mesh Panel Swim Dress

Modern swim dresses don’t have to feel outdated.

The mesh panel immediately gives this design a more contemporary feel, while the wire-free construction keeps it comfortable.

I especially appreciate the way it borrows details from lingerie and bodysuit construction.

Swim Shorts Designed for Movement

Affiliate Pick: Xpluswear Design Plus Size Beach Multicolor Graphic Smocking Ruffle Swimsuit Fabric Two-Piece Swimsuit

This set combines additional coverage with a fun, fashion-forward design.

The short-style bottom makes movement easier, while the smocking and ruffle details keep the suit playful.

Modern swimwear continues to blur the line between fashion and function, and I think that’s one of the best changes we’ve seen in the industry.

The Confidence Formula: Five Elements That Change How Swimwear Feels

Proportion

Small changes in shape can completely transform a swimsuit.

Mobility

Move around before you buy it.

If you constantly adjust it at home, you’ll constantly adjust it on vacation.

Support

Look for support systems, not just tighter fabric.

Coverage Choice

Coverage is a personal choice.

I’ve designed everything from fully covered historical garments to custom lingerie and sexy cosplay.

More coverage doesn’t automatically mean more confidence.

Personal Style Alignment

Your swimsuit should still feel like you.

Color Strategies That Transform the Entire Look

Coastal Blues

Woman modeling a blue gradient ombre swim dress set in front of a gazebo and pool with sunglasses and pink and blue hair.

Coastal blues are one of those color families that almost always make sense in swimwear. Navy, cobalt, sky blue, and ocean-inspired ombré shades naturally work with white, tan, metallics, and just about every resort accessory you already own.

Affiliate Pick: Lane Bryant Ombre Underwire Tankini Top Plus Size Swimwear

This one fits the category especially well because the color story does most of the work. The light blue fading into a deeper cobalt gives it that water-inspired look without relying on a print, and the ruched bust adds some shape through the top.

I also like the underwire construction here because it gives the tankini more structure than a basic soft-cup style. After years of working with lingerie, fitted bodysuits, and custom garments, I always pay attention to whether the support is actually built into the design instead of depending on stretch alone.

Modern Tropical Prints

Affiliate Pick: Retro Stage Plus Size 1940s Tropical Floral Bikini Set & Cover-Up Skirt

I love this set because it combines a tropical print with a coordinated cover-up.

The matching skirt transforms the swimsuit into a complete vacation outfit. Tropical prints are

always a classic!

Color Blocking Done Right

The leopard print and mesh inserts create visual contrast without overwhelming the design.

This swimsuit is a perfect example of how strategic panel placement can change the entire look of a garment.

Style Pairing Guide: Turn Plus Size Swimwear Into Vacation Fashion

Swimsuits Styled as Bodysuits

A great swimsuit can become the foundation of an entire outfit.

Linen Layers That Instantly Elevate the Look

Nothing elevates plus size swimwear faster than linen.

Coordinated Resort Sets

Matching sets simplify vacation styling.

Lightweight Shirts as Stylish Cover-Ups

An oversized button-down remains one of the easiest and most versatile cover-ups.

Accessories That Create a Luxury Feel

Jewelry, sunglasses, sandals, and bags can completely transform the same swimsuit.

The Fabric Guide Nobody Talks About

Chlorine Resistance

Frequent swimmers should prioritize chlorine-resistant fabrics.

UV Protection

Built-in UV protection can provide additional peace of mind during long outdoor days.

Quick-Drying Performance

Quick-drying fabrics are incredibly useful during travel.

Texture vs. Stretch

Beautiful textures still need enough stretch and recovery to function properly.

Long-Term Shape Retention

A swimsuit should maintain its shape long after the first wear.

The Resort Capsule Method

One Swimsuit, Three Looks

Style one swimsuit several different ways.

Two Cover-Ups, Endless Combinations

You don’t need an entire suitcase full of cover-ups.

Shoes That Work With Every Outfit

Choose versatile footwear.

Accessories That Travel Light

Accessories create variety without taking up valuable luggage space.

Packing Without Overpacking

After years of packing for fashion shows, conventions, concerts, and travel, I’ve learned that coordinating pieces create more outfits than extra pieces.

Swimwear Confidence Habits That Have Nothing to Do With Size

Stop Comparing Every Outfit

Comparison rarely helps.

Wear the Suit Before Vacation

Test it before you pack it.

Focus on Comfort First

Comfort creates confidence.

Practice Styling at Home

Build outfits before you leave.

Photograph Yourself From Different Angles

Photographs often tell a different story than mirrors.

Future-Proof Your Swim Wardrobe

Invest in Timeless Silhouettes

Classic designs stay relevant much longer.

Refresh With Accessories Instead of New Swimsuits

Accessories can completely refresh an existing look.

Rotate Styles Throughout the Season

Rotation reduces wear and extends the life of stretch fabrics.

Care Techniques That Extend Lifespan

Rinse, wash gently, air dry, and store your swimwear properly.

Final Thoughts

Being a plus size fashion and costume designer has led me to be able to try on many different

swimsuits and styles, but one thing I have definately learned is that confidence starts with

swimwear that supports your lifestyle, not just your measurements.

Modern plus size swimwear proves that support, comfort, and fashion can absolutely exist together.

The goal isn’t to chase every trend.

The goal is to find pieces that make you feel comfortable, confident, and completely like yourself.
